Being unfamiliar with the nearly four decade long career of Mirslaw Balka, James Kalm is taken aback when he enters this overwhelming installation. With "The Order of Things", Gladstone Gallery has walled off the main space, and requires viewers enter the chamber via a small squeaky door. Once inside the viewing area, observers are confronted with massive corten steel hoppers that dominate the space like a pair of minimalist boxes. Appearing like an industrial processor they receive a constant gush of brown, brackish liquid surging from recycling pumps that have hoses leading from the bottom back side to positions above on the ceiling. Radiating a sinister post-industrial presence, this piece questions societies unthinking acceptance of Capitalist production methods.
