Kim Dorland "Ghosts of You and Me" at MIKE WEISS GALLERY

James Kalm first caught a glimpse of the work of Kim Dorland at the SCOPE Art Fair in Manhattan about eight years ago, and was impressed. Since then, he's seen the reputation of this artist grow like the proverbial beanstalk. If fact, your reporter was perhaps the first New York critic to review the New York debut show by Dorland "North" in May, 2008 for the Brooklyn Rail. Along with the public recognition has come a greater mastery and maturity of means. "Ghosts of You and Me" presents new, large scale paintings, with an increased focus on flat color and narrative, while exhibiting greater deliberation and constraint. This program includes interviews with Toronto gallerist, Jamie Angell, and the painter Kim Dorland. A musical introduction by Andrew Forbes of Scottish Octopus was captured live under the Arch at Washington Square Park.
