James Kalm first saw a sizable selection of Ligon's works during the 2002 DOCUMENTA exhibition in Kassel Germany. Since then, he's watched as this inscrutable artist has occasionally been shown in prestigious yet off the main track venues. In 2011 the Whitney Museum presented his first retrospective, curated by Scott Rothkopf. This show features his unique take on the medium of neon, and displays his conceptual and text based works in dramatically low lit galleries. The musical introduction was captured in Tomkins Square Park on Oct. 10, 2012, during an impromptu "battle of the bands" happening with Honk Fest New York.
