Caro Niederer Paintings at HAUSER & WIRTH

After receiving international requests for a viewing, James Kalm stopped in at Hauser and Wirth Gallery to check out the paintings of Caro Niederer. Billed as one of the most significant contemporary Swiss painters, your correspondent was favorably impressed enough to record this visit. Relating to the European school of media derived figurative painting that also includes, Luc Tuymans, Peter Doig and Marlene Dumas, Niederer nevertheless presents a delicate sense of touch, and a finely tuned palette with which she creates her pictures. Beginning with small canvas-board pieces dating from the early 1990s, to her large scaled interiors and landscapes of today, the artist's color, which favors the mauve, magenta to hot pink wedge of the spectrum, carry an intriguingly atmospheric quality that sets this work apart from her contemporaries.
